1.) Applying for Iowa state residency for tuition purposes at the University of Iowa was changed for the 2018-2019 school year to make it harder for incoming freshman to receive instate tuition. It is clear that the University of Iowa changed the requirements to discourage out of state students from applying for state residency, costing the school money. The new requirements are negative and harmful to the students overall college experience. New requirements are working 30 plus hours a week, limited to 6 semester hours, and so much more. These requirements are hard to obtain, working so much and not being able to take as much classes creates a focus on work and not school. In turn, not much time is left for extracurriculars leading a student to feel disconnected from the student body. 2.) Introduction In social psychology has established effective compliance techniques such as the foot-in-the-door phenomenon. This strategy states simply that, “ agreeing to a small request increases the likelihood of agreeing to a second, larger request”(McLeod, pp4, 2014). The original experiment on the foot-in-the-door phenomenon was done by Freedman and Fraser in 1966. In the original study, the prediction was that if a small request was asked first and the person agrees to the smaller request, the person is more likely to agree to a larger request after. This prediction was supported in their data which showed that, “Over 50% of the subjects in the Performance condition agreed to the larger request, while less than 25% of the One-Contact condition agreed to it.
