Topic Proposal

1.) Applying for Iowa state residency for tuition purposes at the University of Iowa was changed for the 2018-2019 school year to make it harder for incoming freshman to receive instate tuition. It is clear that the University of Iowa changed the requirements to discourage out of state students from applying for state residency, costing the school money. The new requirements are negative and harmful to the students overall college experience. New requirements are working 30 plus hours a week, limited to 6 semester hours, and so much more. These requirements are hard to obtain, working so much and not being able to take as much classes creates a focus on work and not school. In turn, not much time is left for extracurriculars leading a student to feel disconnected from the student body.
2.) I intend to create a better alternative to applying for instate tuition that is better for the student in terms of stress and campus involvement, in addition to helping the University of Iowa's budgeting issues
3.) I chose this topic because I applied for Iowa residency last year, and the program before all of the changes was the most stressful experience of my life. In addition to this, I was unable to make many friends my first year outside of my job due to time, making it hard to have a good college experience.

It is an academic source because it explains new findings from an experiment conducted by a University of Iowa graduate student. I plan on using this source to explain the structure used by psychologists debriefing an experiment and its findings. Explanation of Writing Assignment #1

This assignment is comparable to a basic research paper done in normal English courses but is more personal due to the author's connection to the subject matter. The purpose of the first assignment is to learn more about the style of writing required for the author's intended profession. The essay becomes personal to the author through the questions asked in the interview conducted with someone in the specific field being researched.  We are required to write a five-page double-spaced paper explaining the different writing styles and writing skills necessary for the specific profession. The paper must include six written sources and at least three should be academic sources and three non-academic sources are also required. This paper is a good way for students to study and understand the writing responsibilities they will have and the writing skills they will need going into their future careers.
