Title: Applying for Residency at the University of Iowa
Purpose statement: Persuade my audience to change the existing requirements of applying for Iowa state residency for tuition purposes to benefit the students
Thesis statement: The current University of Iowa residency application process is detrimental to the students college experience

Introduction: Hook: Living in the dorms over break story, isolated, alone, focussing on work when others were able to relax and have time away with their families
Thesis: The current University of Iowa residency application process is detrimental to the students college experience.

Main Point #1: 30 hours on average of work in a week
A.) When you work that much you start to feel like less of a student and more of a working adult Distracts you from your studies
No time for extracurriculars, meaning you won't have time to meet and bond with other students outside of work

Main Point #2: Limited to 6 credit hours
Because you are limited to 6 credit hours you fall behind on graduating with your class
You are unable to receive federal aid because you are only a part-time student thus increasing financial stress on the student and students family
You are unable to meet many other college students, because you are not exposed to so many classes like your peers are

My Solution: Instead of making residency harder to achieve to discourage students from doing it, The University should accept students into a residency plan along with acceptance to the University of Iowa and have them do an easier process as a student.
-To apply to try for residency you should submit family financial records to show need, an essay, and there should be a GPA requirement like those of the midwest exchange, my suggestion would be a 3 or higher unweighted GPA on a 4pt scale.
-After selecting 200 people into the residency program they should be allowed 12 credit hours making them a full time student and eligible for aid, and 15 hours a week working. It is recommended for full time students to have a part time job while in college to help them do better in school.

Conclusion:
This solution is best because it saves the school money by not allowing that many people to do the residency program, while also helping the students who do apply for instate tuition to have a more normal and enjoyable college experience.

IMRad Intro and Methods

Introduction In social psychology has established effective compliance techniques such as the foot-in-the-door phenomenon. This strategy states simply that, “ agreeing to a small request increases the likelihood of agreeing to a second, larger request”(McLeod, pp4, 2014). The original experiment on the foot-in-the-door phenomenon was done by Freedman and Fraser in 1966. In the original study, the prediction was that if a small request was asked first and the person agrees to the smaller request, the person is more likely to agree to a larger request after. This prediction was supported in their data which showed that, “Over 50% of the subjects in the Performance condition agreed to the larger request, while less than 25% of the One-Contact condition agreed to it. Thus it appears that obtaining compliance with a small request does tend to increase subsequent compliance” (Freedman and Fraser, 198, 1966).  This is important because this significant data supports that the foot-in...
